Order of the National Green Tribunal regarding Sidhwan Canal pollution, Ludhiana, Punjab, 11/03/2024
Order of the National Green Tribunal in the matter of Kuldeep Singh Khaira & Others Vs State of Punjab & Others dated 11/03/2024.
In the application, the applicant has raised the grievance that Sidhwan Canal passing through Ludhiana was highly polluted on account of dumping of plastic bags, polyester clothes waste and other nonbiodegradable material and also on account of huge encroachment.
The Joint Committee constituted by the tribunal, in its report, had found dumping of solid waste into the canal water. The report filed by the Municipal Corporation, Ludhiana had failed to give any satisfactory response and had not disclosed any effective steps to remediate the situation. During the course of argument, the Counsel for Municipal Corporation, Ludhiana has submitted that now the situation has been remediated and 100 per cent garbage has been cleared from the canal. However, this statement has been objected to by one of the petitioners and the petitioner has sought a week's time to file an objection to the report.
The next listing of the matter has been fixed for May 14, 2024.
