A promising perspective for the management of African inland fisheries: the balanced harvesting approach

The potential of African inland fisheries is largely underestimated. However, fully harnessing its potential is essential to meet the continent’s growing demand for food of high nutritional value. The management of these fisheries has been strongly influenced by models emerging from industrial marine fisheries, based on the principle of selectivity of catches, with the aim of avoiding catching small fish. It appears that these models do not optimize the use of resources and in fact lead to imbalances in ecosystems.
