Order of the Supreme Court regarding rising vehicular pollution in Delhi NCR, 20/01/2025
Order of the Supreme Court in the matter of M C Mehta Vs Union of India & Others dated 20/01/2025. The matter related to increase in vehicular pollution in the national capital region and the need for an effective public transport system. The apex court said it was deliberating setting norms granting permission for construction of apartments and that no apartments without a specified parking lot should be allowed to come up. The SC also wanted to know the plans by the government to make electric vehicles affordable.
A bench comprising Justices Abhay S Oka and Ujjal Bhuyan sought response from various authorities including central ministries like Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH); Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA); Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI); Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoPNG) and Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC).
In addition, the SC sought response from state bodies related to urban planning and development from Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh like Delhi Development Authority (DDA), Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD); New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC). In the response, the concerned authorities has been asked to set out the timelines for compliance. The next hearing of the case is on February 3, 2025.
