Order of the National Green Tribunal regarding dwindling numbers of Gangetic Dolphins, 01/05/2025
Order of the National Green Tribunal regarding News Item titled "Endangered Gangetic dolphins found in most tributaries of Ganges prompting urgent conservation" appearing in Mongaby- India dated 20.05.2024 dated 01/05/2025.
Counsel appearing for the Wildlife Institute of India seeks further two weeks’ time to file the additional reply in terms of the direction contained in the order dated January 20, 2025. The NGT through its previous order had directed the Wildlife Institute of India to file a report giving the full particulars and the manner and methodology that was adopted for estimating the dolphin numbers in the Ganga Basin.
In order to obtain the suggestions for preservation and increasing the number of dolphin in gigantic basin the court by order, January 20, 2025 had impleaded the Director, National Dolphin Research Centre (NDRC) Patna and Director, Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute (CIFRI) Barrackpore, Kolkata.
However, inspite of service of notice, no one was present to represent NDRC and CIFRI. Hence, NGT, May 1,2025 directed the Director, National Dolphin Research Centre (NDRC) Patna and Director, Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute (CIFRI) Barrackpore, Kolkata to remain virtually present on the next date of hearing (September 4, 2025) to assist the tribunal.
