Order of the National Green Tribunal in the matter of News Item titled “Locals claim pollution killing fish in Gopanpally lake; officials to inspect” appearing in The Times of India dated 15.04.2025" dated May 1, 2025.
The application was registered suo motu on the basis of the news item titled "Locals claim pollution killing fish in Gopanpally lake; officials to inspect” appearing in The Times of India dated April 15, 2025. The news item relates to suspected water pollution in Gopanpally Lake, Hyderabad, causing mass fish deaths due to alleged sewage and drainage inflow. As per the news article a nearby sewage treatment plant (STP) is discharging both treated and possibly untreated wastewater directly into the lake. Additionally, drainage water from surrounding areas, including Nallagandla and Gopanpally, is reportedly contaminating the lake.
The news item further states that despite multiple complaints to the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), no effective action has been taken.
NGT directed notices to be issued to Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation; Telangana State Pollution Control Board; Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) and Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply & Sewerage Board. The respondents have been directed to file their response before the southern zonal bench of the tribunal one week before the next date of hearing (July 1, 2025).
