Report by Bengaluru Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) on a proposed underground sewer line beneath the walkway of Puttenahalli lake, Karnataka, 01/05/2025

  • 01/05/2025

Report on behalf of Bengaluru Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) in compliance of the National Green Tribunal order dated April 24, 2025. An application was filed before the NGT by Yelahanka-Puttenahalli Lake and Bird Conservation Trust, praying for stopping the construction of a pipeline on a walking path of the lake, a land that is classified as tank area. The applicant said that the construction would adversely affect the lake area and also pointed to the absence of a detailed project report (DPR) or a technical plan.

The BWSSB report, May 3, 2025 filed before the NGT said that to ensure that no sewage enters the Puttenahalli lake it is necessary to lay a 700 mm reinforced cement concrete (RCC) sewer line for about 600 meters on the lake bund walking path. This will help to "convey the sewage from this upcoming pipeline to the upcoming STP at Yelahanka." Further, Instead of manholes, the sewer lines will be provided with machine holes that will not let any sewage spill over outside the sewer line, even if it is submerged.

The pathway of the proposed BWSSB pipeline falls in Puttenahalli village, Bangalore North taluk. The area has been classified as a "tank". "However, physically, the lake does not extend to the place where the pipeline is being laid down."
