Ups and downs of Indian health
India faces an acute double burden of disease. While nutritional and communicable diseases remain serious, non-communicable diseases are on the rise, says the eighth report of the World Health Organization on the world health situation.
India spent slightly more than 3 per cent of its GNP on health in 1988. About 43 per cent of the total health expenditure was spent on local health care. India's infant mortality rate has been declining steadily and its average life expectancy is going up. Yet, India has a long way to go to give its people a better quality of life.
