From the Western Ghats to the Thar desert, all the way up to the Himalaya, India's ecological diversity means there is a great variety of grasslands. There are 400 species of grass in India, 139 of these are endemic (specific to the region they are found in). India is one of the nine countries where significant depletion of pasture species is taking place.

No serious effort has been made to collect grass genetic resources. The last survey on the various rangelands of India is more than 30 years old. In 1979, 80 per cent of the rangelands were classified as
