Jumping jack virus Japanese encephalitis (je) is caused by a flavivirus. (Flavus: Latin for yellow, because the most common virus in this family is the yellow fever virus; diseases like dengue are also caused by a flavivirus). The first recorded outbreak of JE was in Japan in the 1870s.
