vietnam: Beginning November 2001, the Vietnamese government will move a herd of Asian elephants from the environmentally-degraded Binh Thuan to the Dak Lak province. The elephants face extinction due to poaching and habitat loss. "Only 80 Asian elephants are left in the country. Vietnam should take urgent measures to revive their population,' says Frank Momberg, the Indo-China programme manager of Fauna and Flora International ( ffi ), an environmental organisation. Conservationists opine that with proper planning, clashes between humans and wild elephants can be avoided. "To protect the elephants, the government needs to bring all stakeholders together through an integrated planning process,' says Momberg.
