The Madras IIT located just opposite to Anna University has a different tale to tell. The premier institute of technology had to postpone classes recently due to scarcity of water. The institute requires around eight lakh litres of water daily. Part of this requirement is met from openwells and borewells within the campus, which sprawls over 720 acres. A major quantity is purchased from metro water supply of the city corporation. Considering the average annual rainfall of Chennai city at 1200mm, the total rainwater harvesting potential in IIT is 720 x 4000 x 1.2m which is 34,56,000 cu.m per year or 94,68,000 litres per day. This shows that the daily requirement of the campus is just 10% of the rainwater that falls in the campus.
