Key directives
November 28, 2001: The Supreme Court (SC) directed the states to complete the identification of below-poverty-line families, issue cards and commence distribution of foodgrains under various schemes by January 2002.
May 8, 2002: The SC ruled that the Union government should release money entitlements under different employment generation schemes to each state on schedule. The respondents should ensure that ration shops remain open in all months during fixed hours.
October 29, 2002: In case of non-compliance of court orders, the concerned chief secretaries or administrators of states or Union Territories would be held responsible by the SC.
