DTH at your doorstep

  • 14/02/2004

Direct-To-Home (DTH) is just around the corner. The consumer is all set to break out of the cable operator's dread grasp and deal directly with the broadcaster.

You get a small dish installed on your rooftop, and a decoder with smart card. The dish catches the transmission and the decoder allows you to unscramble and watch all the channels you have paid for. DTH would also enable you watch your favourite programmes which you might have missed. DTH is technologically superior than the current cable TV system or even the CAS offered through cable. It offers much-improved picture and sound quality to viewers.

ZEE TV has been already offering its DTH, which hasn't much caught on, except in areas where cable cannot reach. Most of the major channels are as yet not available on Zee DTH. Just a few days back the Tatas announced a tie-up with the Star group. According to reports, the Tata-Star DTH we be modelled on the UK's BskyB that offers about 422 channels. The Indian viewer will finally be able to receive all the major channels from across the world.

That is, if you can pay. The initial cost of the dish plus the set top box could be more than Rs 5,000 and the monthly bill could be about Rs 300 to Rs 400. Perhaps, much more.
