Dumping of silt from irrigation canals in Kolkata: NGT seeks reply from the Irrigation and Waterways Department, West Bengal, 08/09/2023
Order of the National Green Tribunal in the matter of Prithvigaurov Chakravarty Vs Kolkata Municipal Corporation & Others dated 08/09/2023.
The NGT noted that the inspection report said that an area of 1½ bigha was found to be dumped with silt dredged from different irrigation canals. Due to improper dumping and instrumental operations, potholes had also developed inside the premises (temporary dumping ground) which contains accumulated stagnant water. The inspection report mentions that it is the Irrigation and Waterways Department, West Bengal who is carrying out the dumping activities.
The NGT directed the Principal Secretary, Irrigation and Waterways Department, West Bengal to file his personal affidavit with regard to the allegations made in the application and the Committee Report within two weeks. The NGT also asked the Principal Secretary, Irrigation and Waterways Department to file an affidavit stating that the entire muck and dump which has been filled in the area in question has been removed and the land is restored to its original form by the next date of listing, September 22, 2023.
