Report by the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board on cleaning of Buckingham canal, 19/02/2025
Report by the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) in OA No 194 of 2024 (SZ) (Suo Motu Vs CPCB) dated 19/02/2025. The matter related to pollution of Buckingham canal.
TNPCB in its report said that requisite action are being taken by the authorities to clean up the canal. The court was informed that Buckingham Canal stretch of 500 m from either side of MRTS railway station, Chepauk was inspected on October 9, 2024. It was observed that there was no water clogging in the canal and free flow of water was found. No pet bottle stagnation was found. The public informed that the Greater Chennai Corporation has cleaned the stretch on October 7, 2024 and is cleaned twice in a month by the corporation.
The NGT had registered the application suo motu based on the news item appeared in the Times of India dated January 19, 2024 titled "Buckingham Canal remains choked with garbage sewage".
