NCPCR’S discussion with State Government of Meghalaya on mining policy of state and child labour in coal mining
The issue of child labour in the coal mines area of Jaintia Hills District, Meghalaya has been in the news, posing serious concern and challenges for the State as well as the apex child rights body. The objectives of Dr. Yogesh Dube, Member, NCPCR visit to Shillong, Meghalaya, from 7 to 10 January, 2013, was to meet with Chief Secretary along with concerned Principal Secretaries, to discuss and review about child labour and labour safety in mines in general and child labour, labour safety in mines of Jaintia Hills (Meghalaya) in particular. The major purpose was to discuss with the State Government on the latest Mining Policy of Meghalaya. The discussion also focused on children of migrant labourers in the State and about mapping of the vulnerable/sensitive areas where child labour is rampant. Dr. Dube also held meeting with H.E. the Governor of Meghalaya, for discussion on child labour and other child rights issues in the State.
