VALPOI: In a move that could spark off a major row, the Mauxi and Keri panchayats in Sattari Taluka have opposed the Government’s proposal to include a part of forest area in Sattari taluka as ‘tiger reserve area’. Addressing a press conference at Valpoi on Thursday, Sarpanchas Datta Gawas (Mauxi) and Jivba Rane (Keri) have objected to allot a part of forest area in Sattari as ‘tiger reserve area’, unless the Government spells out its plan for the rehabilitation and compensation to affected farmers.

Members say it will help ganja cultivators, encourage poaching The Central Empowered Committee (CEC) of the Supreme Court on August 7 rejected a proposal cleared by the Tamil Nadu Government for laying a road connecting Karumbarai in Theni Forest Division with the grizzled giant squirrel sanctuary near Watrap in Virudhunagar district. According to Ministry of Environment and Forests sources, the CEC, after inspecting the areas in Theni and the sanctuary on June 13, held public hearing on four occasions. AHMEDABAD: The illegal trade of turtles in markets of Ahmedabad continues to mushroom unabated. Last year, the trend was to bring home the Red-eared slider of Singapore, this year it is the native Indian roofed turtle or Pangshura tecta. The turtle, endemic to the Ganges, is terrestrial and lives in fresh water. The reptile goes on to live for 200 years, if reared in its natural habitat, does not survive for more than 20 days after it's bought from pet shops in the city.

The temporary ban on tourism in core areas of tiger reserves has taken a financial toll on the Jungle Lodges and Resorts (JLR), which maintains wildlife and natural properties across the State. Left with no opportunity to go on a tiger safari, tourists who had made advance bookings at the Kabini River Lodge, Bandipur Safari Lodge, River Tern Lodge and K Gudi Wilderness Camp, are besieging JLR offices to get refunds. The ban was imposed by the State government on July 25 in line with a Supreme Court order.
