Jaipur: The famed hill forts of Rajasthan are inching closer to get the World Heritage Site status. At the moment, seven forts-- Chittorgarh, Kumbhalgarh, Gagron, Ranthambore, Amber, Jalore and Bala Kila are on the UNESCO tentative list. “The UNESCO team was in Jaipur on Monday to discuss the nomination of ‘Hill forts of Rajasthan’ for the world heritage site status. The ‘Hill Forts of Rajasthan’ are strategically built in a series and located on the oldest mountain range of the Aravallis or the Vindhyan range in the region. We made a presentation on all the forts and answered all their queries. Later, we took them to the Amber Fort,” said Rakesh Srivastava, principal secretary and commissioner, tourism.

Wildlife protection gone for a toss
DIBRUGARH: The impunity with which poachers are killing wild animals, especially the one–horned rhinoceros in the State, is worrying. The recovery of the headless carcass of an elephant at Charaipung range reinforces the ineffectiveness of the wildlife protection measures of the forest department. Since 2007, 93 rhinos have been killed, 12 of them in the last two months. In September last year, five rhinos were killed, two on consecutive days. The discovery of a rhino whose horn had been cut away while it was left to die a slow death last year, sent shock waves but since then, more such killings with the same modus operandi have taken place.

Manas National Park earns record revenue
Manas National Park under BTAD comprising Bhuyanpara, Bashbari and Panbari ranges was formally opened for visitors on November 4 last and was closed on last May 31. During this period the park collected revenue to the tune of Rs 15,34,045. During this period altogether 10,152 Indian tourists visited the park while the number of foreign tourists was only 158.
