Carbon or greenhouse gas (GHG) offsets have long been promoted as an important element of a comprehensive climate policy approach. Offset programs can reduce the overall cost of achieving a given emission goal by enabling emission reductions to occur where costs are lower.
Considering the costs and risks of inaction, ambitious action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions is economically rational. However, success in abating world emissions will ultimately require a least-cost set of policy instruments that is applied as widely as possible across all emission sources (countries, sectors and greenhouse gases).
The European Union is running the largest multi-country, multi-sector greenhouse gas emission trading scheme (ETS) world-wide. This report presents the experiences from Member States on the implementation of the trading system. The report for reporting year 2008 covers both specific information on the trading year 2007 as well as some findings from the whole first trading period.
This report proposes solutions for the cement industry which is responsible for 8% of global CO2 emissions. It describes a scenario in which the industry sector grows to more than twice its size in volume by 2050 while it reduces its absolute CO2 emissions by approximately three quarters compared to global emissions in 2007.

The European Union has a right to impose legislation to cut emissions from aviation and showing weakness would encourage further challenges to EU policies, the EU's climate chief told airlines Monday. Global airlines have attacked the European Union at their annual meeting over its plan to force them into the region's carbon market. From January 1 next year, the EU will require all airlines
New Delhi India Inc is employing various means to cut its greenhouse gas emissions and the efforts are not just restricted to a handful of sectors but cut across the spectrum, from automobiles and infrastructure to FMCG and consumer durables. Among the Indian firms that have managed to successfully put in place a road map for gradual reduction of emissions include Binani Cement, Mahindra &
Migration is part of human history; the concept of environmental migration however, is still controversially debated. While some scholars predict high numbers of people migrating due to climate and environmental changes, others still insist that there is not enough scientific evidence for the existence of the phenomenon of environmental migration at all.
Sri Lanka has made encouraging progress in reducing poverty to below 7 percent of the population, but pockets of severe poverty remain and future prosperity will depend on addressing chronic revenue shortfalls
To say that the Mashelkar committee report on auto fuels is an example of putting the cart before the horse would be an understatement. What we see today is a case of turning both the horse and cart

Mumbai The closure of the 25-year-old dumping ground at Gorai creek in Borivli has earned the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation Rs 27 crore by trade of an estimated 31,033 tonnes of carbon credits a year. The Asian Development Bank has agreed to purchase the carbon credits from the civic body at a cost of 12 Euros per carbon credit till 2014 and has made the payment for 50 per cent.
The growing health risks associated with greenhouse gas emissions highlight the need for new energy policies that emphasize efficiency and low-carbon energy intensity. The authors assessed the relationships
Despite a booming economy, emissons of man-made carbon dioxide remained almost flat in the U.S. last year, and global emissions appear to have dropped. That has led to some experts to believe that
<p>New Delhi With four times the population of the US, an economy growing 8-9% a year and surging energy demand, India’s race to become an economic power has propelled it to No 3 in the list of top carbon polluters. India’s greenhouse gas emissions will keep rising as it tries to lift millions out of poverty and connect nearly half-a-billion people to electricity grids.
They cannot measure it in metres; they cannot explain what is happening, but they know they can no longer cope or adapt. My colleague Pradip Saha has been filming in Ghoramara, an island in the Sunderban delta, to understand why, in this zone suspended between land and water, people talk of nothing but subsidence. Savita's narration captures the mood.
Mapping and monitoring carbon stocks in forested regions of the world, particularly the tropics, has attracted a great deal of attention in recent years as deforestation and forest degradation account for up to 30% of anthropogenic carbon emissions, and are now included in climate change negotiations. We review the potential for satellites to measure carbon stocks, specifically
