A70-member team of Uttarakhand forest guards has counted as many as 34 tiger cubs along with 17 to 18 tigresses in the Corbett Tiger Reserve during four days of monitoring carried out a couple of days ago. Senior members of the team said the numbers indicated possibility of a rise in tiger population in Corbett in years to come, provided all the cubs survive.

The caretaker government plans to ban two-stroke vehicles in all the district headquarters and metropolitan cities to reduce greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to hazardous global warming. "Government is thinking about making cities and district towns clean by getting rid of two-stroke engine as it causes massive air pollution,' Raja Devasish Roy, special assistant to chief adviser on Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) and Forest Affairs, told UNB. He said the government will take steps to create awareness among the people against the use of two-stroke engines.

Three wild elephants, which were tailing a herd towards Kaziranga National Park, trampled to death one Baap Hazarika (70) and injured two others at Sial Chapori near Dergaon last night. The body of the deceased man was recovered this morning. Hazarika is the fifth victim in jumbo attacks which took place in the riverine areas along the Brahmaputra river this year. Meanwhile, the marauding jumbo herd, which had been driven away towards the national park, destroyed the Mohpora forest camp under Agaratoli range of KNP. There are no reports of any casualty.
- Office supplies retailer Staples has cut off business with Indonesia's Asia Pulp & Paper (APP), one of the world's biggest paper companies, due to concerns over environmental issues, The Wall Street Journal said on Friday. The report quoted a Staples executive as saying Staples had severed ties with APP late last month because there was no indication that it was making strides to protect the environment. Environmental groups have said forest-clearing by the APP group is endangering tigers, elephants and orangutan as well as destroying preciously diverse flora.
