This paper examines the effectiveness of damage control mechanisms to reduce crop losses from agricultural pests. It uses data from a sample of Cole crop (Cauliflower and Cabbage) growing households in the Bhaktapur district of Nepal to study the impact of pesticides on agriculture production. The results suggest that the marginal productivity of pesticides is close
Vegetable farming is an important income generating activity in parts of rural Nepal. However, vegetable farming is pesticide intensive and pesticide exposure is beginning to emerge as a problem. A SANDEE study examines the impacts of pesticide use on vegetable farmers in the mid-hills area of Nepal, some 40km
Key World Energy Statistics contains timely, clearly-presented data on the supply, transformation and consumption of all major energy sources.
The defining feature of global energy markets remains high and volatile prices, reflecting a tight balance of supply and demand. This has put issues such as energy security, energy trade and fossil alternative energies at the forefront of the political agenda worldwide. The BP Statistical Review of World Energy 2008 provides quantitative data on the major fundamentals of the energy market.
The purpose of this study is to examine the national security consequences of climate change. The specific questions addressed in this report are: What conditions are climate changes likely to produce around the world that would represent security risks to the United States?; What are the ways in which these conditions may affect America’s national security interests?; What actions should the nation take to address the national security consequences of climate change?
The German Advisory Council on Global Change (WBGU) is convinced that a new climate policy dynamic is required worldwide. Currently, all eyes are on Germany: its Presidency of the Council of the European Union and Presidency of G8 offer a dual opportunity to drive climate protection forward. The Council‘s core messages are as follows: climate protection is both worthwhile and feasible, further development of the UN climate convention, making the most of the G8 Summit at Heiligendamm, and reaffirming the European Union‘s leading role.
India's economic growth is mainly based on energy from fossil fuels like coal and therefore has considerable potential in reducing its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions as well in CDM participation. CDM projects starting after January 1, 2000, are eligible to earn certified emission reductions (CERs). However the modalities and procedures of the CDM may be too complex to exploit its full benefit. This guidebook will provide a roadmap to the project developers and investors for realizing the full benefit of CDM within the allotted time frame.
Proper energy planning is essential for achieving energy security. Every country has to formulate its own policy to optimize the use of different energy sources for meeting the demands of its household, agricultural, industrial and commercial sectors. This necessitates an integrated and updated database of the production and consumption of different energy sources viz., coal, crude, petroleum, natural gas and electricity (hydro and nuclear). The present issue, "Energy Statistics 2007', is the 15th issue in the series.
The India Energy Conclave 2007 would focus on the preparedness of the Indian energy sector to keep up with the rapidly growing Indian economy. It will focus on a wide range of topics of interest to stakeholders. It would cover both conventional and non-conventional energy and focus on policy, power, coal, gas and technology.
The Annual Energy Outlook 2008 (AEO2008) presents projections and analysis of US energy supply, demand, and prices through 2030. The projections are based on results from the Energy Information Administration's National Energy Modeling System. The AEO2008 includes the reference case, additional cases examining energy markets, and complete documentation.
In a world of rapidly rising greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and growing unease about imported oil, the appeal of renewable fuels is growing apace. Biofuels
Nuclear energy will enable India to meet the twin challenges of energy security and environmental sustainability. It will also have major spin-offs for the development of the industries, both public and private. The 123 Agreement between India and United States of America would put an end to technology denial regimes against India that have been in place for three decades and end India's nuclear isolation. It will open the doors for India to have civil nuclear cooperation as an equal partner with the USA and the rest of the world.
What are the impacts of the increasing spread of biofuels on access to land in producer countries, particularly for poorer rural people? Biofuels could revitalise rural agriculture and livelihoods
This study aims to reveal Sub-Saharan Africa
The role envisioned for liquid biofuels for transport has come under increased scrutiny in the past year or two, due to the potential social and environmental impacts associated with scaling up biofuels production and use from its low level
Rural electrification can have many benefits-not only bringing lighting, but improving the quality of health care, spreading information and supporting productive enterprises. The extent of these benefits has been questioned, arguing that they may be insufficient to justify the investment costs. This report quantifies these benefits.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) is working in conjunction with the Government of India as part of the Methane to Markets Partnership (M2M), an international initiative to assist partner countries in reducing global methane emissions. M2M promotes the beneficial use of landfill methane, while also reducing landfill methane emissions to the atmosphere.
