New Delhi: Flagship refiner-marketer IndianOil Corporation is setting up a gridlinked solar power plant worth about Rs 100 crore at Barmer in Rajasthan, even as the state-run firm sharpens focus on non-conventional energy sources in an attempt to supplement fossil fuels earnings with carbon credits and move towards a green future.
Climate change is the greatest challenge before the global society, impacting the ecology, economy and society in several ways. Changes related to the climate of Rajasthan are over and above the natural climate variability prevailing in this area. Studies have shown that Rajasthan falls within the areas of greatest climate sensitivity, maximum vulnerability and lowest adaptive capacity.
<p>Solar photovoltaic system costs have fallen steadily for decades. They are projected to fall even farther over the next 10 years. Meanwhile, projected costs for construction of new nuclear plants have risen steadily over the last decade, and they continue to rise.<br /> </p>

The existing share of renewables in total electricity is around 3.9% in 2009-10.
