    Expressing concern over acute shortage of water in Sindh, Awami Tehrik chief Rasool Bux Palijo has said that even drinking water is not available in the province but water is still being released in Chashma-Jehlum and Taunsa-Panjnad link canals and Thal Canal. In a statement faxed to Dawn here on Sunday, he alleged that through the canals 40,000 cusecs of Sindh's share was being stolen. Not only this, but Tarbela Dam was being filled while Sindh was crying hoarse for water, he said.

  • Typhoid breaks out in Dir villages

    Residents of different villages in Adenzai, Talash and Timergara localities of Lower Dir district have complained about the outbreak of waterborne diseases, especially typhoid, during the past 20 days. They alleged that health department was doing nothing to cope with the situation. Talking to Dawn on Monday they said that children and grown up people had been suffering from high fever with pain due to the said diseases. They said the number of victims was increasing with each passing day.

  • '16pc filtered water contaminated'

    Sixteen percent of the filtered water supplied to Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) is infected with bacteria, revealed a recent survey conducted by Pakistan Environmental Protection Agency (Pak EPA) over the filtration plants installed in Islamabad. According to the report, four out of the total 24 functional filtration plants in the federal Capital give out contaminated water even after filtration, which, as the report stated, was rich with bacteria besides other health-risking ingredients. The sectors where these plants are situated are I-9/1, I-10/1, G-9/2 and I-10/2.

  • Sukkur without water for 10 days

    Almost 80 per cent people of the city and adjoining areas have not received drinking water for ten days and as many as 13 demonstrations were held by the affected people from Thursday to Sunday outside the offices of union councils and district council. In New Taluka Sukkur, water supply from Maka Goth Water Works Phase-IV has been suspended since April 18, adversely affecting the residents of Maka Goth, Adam Shah Colony, Nawan Goth, Shah Khalid Colony, Bihar Colony, Military Road, Shamsabad, Waritar Road, Choona Bhatta, Golimar and SITE area.

  • Locals block highway demanding drinking water

    Local resdients obstructed Sailekh Bazaar stretch of Dashrath Chand Highway in Baitadi district on Sunday protesting the shortage of drinking water at local taps. The locals blocked the road at the bazaar near the district headquarters Gadi stating the taps ran dry for the last three days in around 20 taps of the locality. Thousands of passengers including those heading for hilly-district Dadeldhura have been left stranded due to the blockade. The locals insisted that they will continue the strike until they were ensured drinking water.

  • Over 60 people served notices for misuse of water

    The Municipal Corporation (MC) has issued challans against three persons and served notices to 65 others for watering their lawns and washing cars during peak morning hours despite a ban imposed by the civic body. The MC had started the drive on April 15 and since than more than 500 notices have been issued. The Public Health Division (PHD) of the civic body has constituted 13 teams consisting of sub-divisional engineers and junior engineers. The teams visited all the sectors in the city and conducted checks to ensure that people are not washing cars or watering lawns.
