PANJIM, MARCH 27 (HR) – Chief Minister Digambar Kamat will head the House Committee to look into the garbage dumping problems of Panjim and Margao. The House, on Tuesday, had decided to appoint a House Committee in wake of the protests from the villagers of Bainguinim, Old Goa and the surrounding areas over the proposed waste treatment plant at Bainguinim.
Garbage is the premier problem where human civilisation has been affected, befallen or otherwise displaced from place to place like, gypsies. The problem is obviously a result of ill planned human activities in industrialisation and urbanisation. It is always difficult to bring something back into the orderly position if it has been disordered.
President Mahinda Rajapaksa has directed Environment and Natural Resources Minister Champika Ranawaka and Urban Development Minister Dinesh Gunawardena to step up action to address the country's growing garbage problem at a special meeting held at Temple Trees.

Mumbai: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will receive Rs20 crore in lieu of carbon credit from the Asian Development Bank. The BMC earned its carbon credit from the Gorai dumping ground, which becomes the first garbage dump in the country to earn 'carbon credits'. The BMC sold it to recover the money it spent on closing the dumping site.

Ahmedabad: To bring in accountability in the issue of biomedical waste incineration, the health committee of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has requested the municipal commissioner to allot land for the incinerating contractors. This, according to the committee, would centralise waste destruction and bring the contractors under the jurisdiction of AMC.
NAGAPATTINAM: The authorities of the famous Velankanni church (Shrine Basilica of Our Lady of Health) on Tuesday launched a solid waste management project at a cost of Rs. 1 crore in the campus to maintain hygiene and public health as lakhs of pilgrims from various parts of the country visit the church throughout the year.
