  • 30 villages get irrigation water after a decade

    A large number of farmers celebrated the irrigation water supply after a decade's suspension to 30 villages situated at Moongi distributary of lower Gogera branch canal near Gojra on Thursday. Farmers arranged a reception for DCO Chaudhry Muhammad Ashraf and irrigation department officials at the Moongi rest house. Addressing the gathering, the DCO said that 60 outlets of this distributary had either been broken or closed on account of water theft and silt.

  • Water Council demands dismissal of Punjab minister

    The Punjab Water Council (PWC) has demanded dismissal of Irrigation Minister Raja Riaz allegedly for working against interests of the province. Raja Riaz who is the senior PPP minister in the Punjab government categorically stated here on Wednesday that Punjab should forget construction of the controversial mega Kalabagh dam on river Indus. The Executive Committee of Punjab Water Council held an emergency meeting here on Thursday and said that the Punjab Assembly has already passed a resolution favouring the immediate construction of Kalabagh Dam.

  • Another dam gives way in Jagraon

    Huzra (Jagraon): After Mattewara, about 120-foot-high dhussi dam here was washed away yesterday night due to strong water pressure. The damage started on Tuesday with little erosion, but by last night a part of the dam was eroded. Repair work has been started.

  • Farmers face problem in rotting jute plants in Narsingdi

    The jute growers in Narsingdi are facing problem in rotting their harvested jute plants due to lack of sufficient water in canals, ponds and ditches. Rotting of jute plants need at least three-foot depth of water but the local water sources such as canals, ponds and ditches lack the required amount of water, local farmers said. Absence of sufficient water in the canals and ditches are seriously hampering rotting of jute plants in different areas of the district this year, they said.

  • Apathy hits projects

    Kadapa, Aug. 18: Though the Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy, with a big intention to make the agricultural fields green, had sanctioned Rs 3,402.93 crore for various irrigation projects, the works on various projects were going at a snail's pace, allegedly because of the lackadaisical attitude of the government officials.

  • Crops drying up in tail-end areas

    The Sindh Chamber of Agriculture said on Sunday that the water rotation programme being followed despite swelling Indus River, had led to complete destruction of standing sugarcane crop on thousands of acres of land in Khairpur Gambho at the tail-end of Naseer Canal. A meeting of the chamber chaired by Syed Qamaruzzaman Shah demanded supply of water to tail-end growers and regretted that the sugar mill owners had withheld tens of millions of rupees they owed to growers.

  • President launches World Bank project for Dam Safety and Water Resources Planning in Sri Lanka

    Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa today launched the World Bank funded project to improve the operational efficiency of some 80 ageing dams and to establish sustainable institutional arrangements for safety management and operations and maintenance of major dams in Sri Lanka in Polonnaruwa today. World Bank has approved a US$65.33 million credit to fund the project to improve 32 of the 80 dams that have been categorized as high risk.

  • Small hydel power projects are harmless: Dy Speaker, MLA

    DH News Service, Madikeri: "If the localites do not oppose, then we do not have any objections for small hydel power projects,' said Deputy Speaker K G Boapaih and MLA M P Appacchuranjan. Speaking at a discussion on the development of Kodagu at Patrika Bahvana in Madikeri on Tuesday, they said hydel power projects are neither harmful to the environment nor submerge low laying areas. However, we will not object, if the residents are happy with the hydel power projects.

  • Focus on drip irrigation

    Visakhapatnam, Aug. 12: The district collector, Mr Sanjay Kumar, asked the agriculture officials to focus on the drip irrigation. Talking to the officials at a review meeting held here on Tuesday, the collector told them to encourage farmers to cultivate cashew, mango and orange through drip irrigation as per the fertility of the land under state government's Indira Prabha scheme.

  • Rs 537 million for reforms on 'Farmer Organisations' in Punjab

    ): The Punjab Irrigation Department is spending a sum of Rs 537 million on formation of 'Farmer Organisations' in the culturable command areas to expedite the institutional reforms in the province. Social mobilisation and training is also a component of this project.
