  • VHP, RSS support Save Ganga drive

    The Save Ganga Movement, which began with a fast unto death by a former IIT professor, may turn into a major political issue ahead of the 2009 Lok Sabha elections. After more than 30 Hindutva outfits supported the movement, Baba Ramdev announced the formation of the Ganga Raksha Manch at Haridwar on Tuesday. Although it was said that the manch would not be affiliated to any political party, the presence of senior VHP leaders Ashok Singhal and Pravin Togadia raises many questions.

  • Water level rises in Tarbela dam

    Water level in Tarbela reservoir has increased by about 45 feet during the last six days augmenting the power generation capacity of country's biggest hydel power generation unit. On Tuesday evening the inflow crossed the mark of 300,000 cusecs, raising the expectations of early filling of reservoir during this season, official sources told Dawn here on Tuesday evening. Sources attributed the surging inflow of water in the dam to ever-shooting temperature that caused snow melting in the catchment areas of Indus River.

  • Four million acre feet water stored in dams

    Water and Power Development Authority has so far stored more than four million acre feet water in three reservoirs - Tarbela, Mangla and Chashma - which reached dead level on May 11, 2008. Wapda is storing half of the current inflows of rivers Indus and Jhelum in Tarbela and Mangla dams respectively and releasing 0.32 million cusecs water of the Indus, Jhelum, Kabul and Chenab for sowing of Kharif crop. The position of the river inflows/outflows at Tarbela, Mangla and Chashma along with the reservoirs levels and the barrages on Tuesday morning was as under:

  • Renovated canal brings boon for Rangpur town dwellers

    About 1,20,000 dwellers of Rangpur town have started getting benefit following renovation of century-old Shyama Sundari canal. About 70 per cent of the renovation works on the 14km-long canal has been completed at a cost of about Tk 16 crore. Rest of the work is expected to be completed by November this year. Re-excavation on the canal from Rangpur cantonment to Shapla point have been completed, concrete piling set, grass carpeting at some points completed while tree plantation will begin soon, said Rangpur Municipality Chairman Abdur Rouf Manik.

This shows an increase of around 3 percent over the allocations made for the 2007-08 fiscal and constitute about 11.2 percent of the core Annual Development Programme (ADP) (2008-09) budget under the mid term development framework MTDF 2008-11.

  • Pabna farmers decline to give paddy for irrigation

    Farmers of Atghoria upazila under the district in a press conference yesterday demanded introducing payment of cash money instead of giving one-fourth of the paddy yield as irrigation charge to the deep tube-well owners. Atghoria unit committee of Bangladesh Krishak Oikyo Parishad arranged the press conference at Pabna Press Club auditorium as part of their campaign for removing the tradition of paying one-fourth portion of paddy to the tube-well owners.
