The government should only in exceptional cases permit acquisition of farm land for non- agriculture purposes like setting up of industries and housing projects, Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar said on Tuesday. Mr. Pawar, who heads the Empowered Group of Ministers (EGoM) on Land acquisition bill, said there is a pressure on farm land because of rising population. He said the government would ensure agricultural land having high yields is not allowed for acquisition by private firms for non-agriculture purpose.
On a day when the Supreme Court directed the Union and State governments to provide basic infrastructure, including drinking water and toilets, in all schools within six months, a survey conducted among parents (low-income group) in Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Chennai and Bangalore said that “toilets remain the single-most commonly voiced concern for girl students and their parents across India among the lower-income group.” The secondary data of survey added that only 44 per cent schools covered by the Right to Education Act have separate, functioning girls’ toilets. In the rest, girls either need to risk embarrassment and run to nearby fields, or run back home to use the toilet.

Released by global real estate consultancy Cushman & Wakefield (C&W), the report ‘Evolving Paradigm - Future Of Indian Real Estate’ says that nearly 80% of the demand in the city will come from the mid-ranged category. The high-end category will make up for the remaining 20%.

There has been a sharp decline in groundwater levels in several parts of Delhi, West Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Rajasthan over the years, the government said on Friday. According to the data released here, which is part of country’s first ever aquifer atlas, Himachal Pradesh has the best groundwater level as water exploited is quickly recharged. The atlas, first ever compilation of aquifer systems in India, says that within the national capital, southwest Delhi is the worst affected by depleting groundwater levels.
ITANAGAR: Five more deaths reported from remote Anjaw district bordering China took the toll to nine while another four persons still remained traceless in the wake of devastating floods that left over two lakh people affected spread over six districts. Four persons were missing from worst affected Lohit district, official sources said here today. Economic adviser to the Chief Minister and lone MLA from Anjaw, Kalikho Pul today said five people died in different parts of the hilly district adding all seven administrative centers – Hayuliang, Hawai, Manchal, Goliang, Walong,Kibitho and Chaglogam were completely cut off.
One of the resolutions the Coimbatore Corporation Council passed at the Monday’s meeting urged the State Government to sanction a mono rail project for the city. The Mayor proposed the resolution and the Council unanimously accepted it. The Council resolution comes after various associations urged the civic body to take up the issue as the city badly deserved one. More than a fortnight ago, the Residents Awareness Association of Coimbatore urged the Corporation to take up the proposal, saying that cities with far lesser population, area and financial wherewithal had made considerable progress in getting sanction for a mass transport project and a few even commencing preliminary work.
