ICMR plans second dose of measles vaccine
More than two decades after it was introduced in the National Immunisation Programme, the “single dose” measles vaccine is likely to be replaced with a “double dose” jab. The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), which is mulling over the issue in consultation with 15-20 experts from across the country, is of the view that there should be a “second” opportunity.

Concerns raised, five-in-one vaccine will have to wait
The ambitious plan of the Union Health Ministry to introduce a pentavalent vaccine — to fight five diseases — in the National Immunisation Programme early this year has received a setback.
With doubts being raised about the “need” of the vaccine, the ministry has now asked the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) to “re-confirm” the decision to introduce it.

Centre to roll out ‘107 block plan’ in UP, Bihar for polio eradication
The Centre has identified 107 high-risk polio-affected blocks —66 in UP and 41 in Bihar — and mooted a special “107 block plan” to be implemented in these blocks to boost eradication efforts.

No polio case reported in UP
LUCKNOW: The bivalent polio drop seems to be working. Not a single case of polio has been reported from Uttar Pradesh till now. However, more than 700 suspected cases (those suffering from acute flaccid paralysis) have been reported from across the state. But detailed examination of their stool samples revealed that none were suffering from the polio.

New polio vaccination scheme
The Union government has launched a new immunization polio campaign in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh. Though the Delhi government has already a programme of polio drops, the central government has chosen the city for the fresh vaccination programme as four cases of polio – three p1 and one p 3 were reported in the Capital last year.

UP polio plan: Cash as booster shot
The Uttar Pradesh government has drawn up a scheme to pay parents for getting their children immunised against polio, measles, TB and other diseases. Planned under the National Rural Health Mission, the scheme is meant to strengthen routine immunisation in the state — the performance of which has often come under criticism from health experts.

Effectiveness of planning and management interventions for improving age-appropriate immunization in rural India
The study involved children aged less than 18 months recruited from Haryana, India, in 2005–2006: 4336 in a pre-intervention cohort and 5213 in a post-intervention cohort. In addition, immunization of 814 hospitalized children from outside the study area was also assessed.
