Infant deaths: Vaccine samples sent for tests

The team from the Union Health Ministry probing the death of four infants during a routine immunisation drive in Mohanlalganj near Lucknow on Saturday has sent samples of the measles vaccine from the stock to the Central Drug Laboratory Kolkata for further investigations.

India is well on its way to eradicate the polio virus, according to health officials who show the sharp dip in the number of cases this year as against last year’s as an indication. Largely because of effective surveillance of migrant population and vaccination drive, so far this year only 25 cases have been registered against last year’s 741.

H1N1 flu: 3 fresh cases, AIIMS doc in ICU
New Delhi: An AIIMS doctor suspected to be suffering from H1N1 infection has been admitted to the intensive care unit at the hospital. Sources said that even though the swine flu was yet to be confirmed, Dr Aarul showed symptoms of the infection and was in a serious condition.

New vaccine used in Pulse Polio drive: 60% turnout
MUMBAI: It was Pulse Polio Sunday with a difference for about 60% of the children under five years of age who stepped out for the two-drop vaccine. Instead of the usual vaccine, for the first time in Mumbai, bivalent oral polio vaccine (BOPV) was used.

Bengal spoiler in polio fight
Calcutta, July 18: Just as India was making progress in checking polio, Bengal threatens to spoil the effort because of what state officials themselves admit to be “complacency”.
Four cases of the dangerous P1 form of the infection have been detected in the state this year out of six in the country — a nosedive after the state recorded zero polio cases last year.
