Thousands of urban poor march in Mumbai against builders
March organised by the National Alliance of People’s Movements Thousands of urban poor of Mumbai marched on the streets of the city, covering a distance of about 30 km in two days, demanding land, housing rights, dignity and equal rights. The march was organised by the National Alliance of People’s Movements, under the leadership of Medha Patkar. The march began on January 1 from two different areas in Mumbai, namely Govandi and Golibar, to demand the implementation of the Rajeev Awas Yojana as self-development towards right to shelter. The protesters halted at Shivaji Park in Dadar on Tuesday night and resumed the march towards Mantralaya in South Mumbai on the morning of January 2. The protesters were stopped in South Mumbai and taken to Azad Maidan.

“If a dam on Kosi did not stop floods, this too will be a waste” Airing scepticism over the inter-linking of rivers serving the desired purpose, social activist Medha Patkar on Sunday charged Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar with embarking on the project in the State without consulting people. “I am apprehensive about inter-linking of rivers serving the desired purpose and if it is so then chronic flood caused by Kosi river should have stopped after construction of dams,” she said at the ninth biennial national conference of the public movements on environmental issues.

GoM wants land Bill provisions to apply with retrospective effect
A 12-member group of ministers (GoM) headed by Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar, formed to vet certain provisions in the controversial Land Acquisition Bill, met in New Delhi on Thursday, but did not take any decision on the draft legislation. The meeting took place amid criticisms from civil society activists that the rural development ministry had watered down some provisions of the Bill, which has been renamed as The Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Bill, 2011. Industry representatives, however, welcomed the changes.
