Environmentalist and Mhadei Bachao Abhiyan Vice President Nandkumar Kamat is at a loss of words to explain the Government's inefficiency to check whether water supplied in people's homes was actually safe for drinking. Addressing a press conference on the eve of World Environment Day that falls tomorrow (June 5), Kamat lamented, "What we are drinking is actually poison water. There are no quality checks and the Government has not bothered to address the problem in spite of reminders and individual representations.'
It comes as a huge sigh of relief to Goans in general that the Goa Bachao Abhiyan (GBA) is united and determined in purpose to act as a watchdog in the formation of the Regional Plan 2021. SEZ Virodhi Manch, a non-government organisation, opposing special economic zones in the state on Tueday threatened to revive its agitation, if the state government fails to denotify the three industrial enclaves which are approved and notified by the union government. "The worst fears of the SEZ Virodhi Manch are confirmed with the central government intimating that it can not denotify the three SEZs notified for Goa. The three special economic zones in Goa notified under Special Economic Zone Act 2005 have already been denotified by the people of Goa and therefore a bureaucratic order is meaningless and impractical, said Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament, Shantaram Naik. Reacting to the refusal by the Union Commerce Ministry to de-notify the three special economic zones, Naik said that he had no doubt that the State government will not leave the issue in wilderness and fight the battle in the interest of the people and the State.

"We have received such a letter and will be taking a stand within a couple of days after thorough discussion on the issue," State Chief Secretary J P Singh said this evening. The commerce ministry's refusal to denotify three SEZs has come as a tough challenge for the state government that will now have to take stand on the issue within two weeks.
