  • MLA threatens to stop dumping at Sonsodo

    The situation at the Sonsodo garbage dump yard is slowly but surely heading towards unmanageable proportions, even as Curtorim MLA Reginaldo Lourenco has threatened to stop garbage dumping at the site if the government fails to work out a solution immediately. A month have gone since Hyderabad-based Hyquip Project signed an agreement with the government to set up the garbage treatment plant at Sondoso with the in vessel technology, but the plant is yet to take shape at the yard.

  • Panchayats cannot revoke approved projects: CM

    Literally giving thumbs down to villages opposing mega housing projects, the government today declared that if a project has been given permission after clearing all technical approvals, the panchayat has no authority to revoke the licence and the government will stand by the project. Addressing a press conference, after the cabinet meeting, Chief Minister Digambar Kamat who was also accompanied by Panchayat Minister Babu Azgaonkar stated that if all rules have been followed and there have been no misrepresentations on the project there is no reason for revoking the licence.

    Cutting across party lines, Sanguem residents on Friday joined hands to strongly oppose the acquisition of large tracts of fertile land in Uguem for the proposed garbage treatment plant of Curchorem Cacora Municipal Council (CCMC). Criticizing the notification for land acquisition process issued by Under Secretary Revenue Department D M Redkar for acquiring the land, Sanguem MLA Vassudev Meng Gaonkar argued that the land acquisition procedure was arbitrary and had no basis.

  • Govt may use khazan lands for pisciculture

    If you thought utilising agricultural land - khazans - for fish farming is bad. Hold your breath... It may not be long before it is officially allowed. In order to facilitate the use of khazan land for pisciculture purpose, the Fisheries Department has recommended amendment to the Land Revenue Act. The State has about 18000 hectares of Khazan land but vast portion has been left unutilized, or fallow. The Department of Fisheries believes it can be utilised for pisciculture.

  • Locals knock HC doors against waste dumping

    Residents of Kharkhatiaghati-Sanguem led by Santano Rodrigues, Nilesh Dessai and Laxman Chauhan have complained to the High Court over the dumping of garbage by Curchorem Cacora Municipal Council (CCMC) in violation of the guidelines laid down by Goa State Pollution Control Board. According to reports, the letter states that CCMC is dumping the garbage openly behind the Sanguem Court, without covering the dumped garbage.

    The Government has geared up its machinery to fight any possible outbreak of dengue, chikungunya and other diseases during the monsoons. A meeting of the Emergency Action Committee for the Management of possible outbreak of dengue fever, chikungunya fever and Japanese encephalitis for North Goa District was held under the Chairmanship of Collector R Mihir Vardhan in the Conference Hall, Collectorate. In the meeting it was decided to create awareness among the people about these dreaded diseases.

Well, no one knows precisely what has caused the fish catch going down quite drastically. "A scientific study needs to be conducted to identify the reasons', Fisheries Director S C Verenkar said. The decline in catch of fish has not only disturbed the trawler operators many of whom had to return empty handed until April end, but also the government authorities.

  • Water shortage in Mollem

    Residents of Palaskata, Makdem, Kajumal, Nandran, Kasavalim, Satpal and Gawaliwada have complained of acute water shortage since March, after the Water Supply department disconnected public taps in many parts of Mollem. "At present, there is about 10 to 12 thousand litres of water shortage per day in the area,' Mollem panch Mr Shahu told Herald. Most of the residents are without water connections and are dependent on public taps. The water supply department has arranged to supply water through tankers, said sources.
