"We will seek justice in the honourable High Court of Bombay" said Dr Shekhar Salkar, General Secretary of National Organization for Tobacco Eradication (NOTE). "Amitabh Bachchan was clearly shown smoking a cigar [in 'Family' film] in all the display-hoardings prominently. This amounts to clear and unambiguous breach of the law prevalent within the state and the country. However the session court did not appreciate the view of NOTE India, thereby absolving the respondents of the charges" added Dr Salkar.
Saline water entered into 15 wells when a bundh breached near the Corjuem ferry wharf in Aldona. River water also gushed into neighbouring paddy fields and damaged the crops. Bardez Mamlatdar S Narulkar and Mapusa Deputy Collector Mahesh Khorjuveker visited the site to access the damage caused to farmers and villagers due to breaching of the bundh. When contacted, Aldona Sarpanch Vallabh Polle said the bundh got breached as a result of poor maintenance.
The Aldona Bachao Abhiyan (ABA) has already collected over 1,000 signatures in an ongoing drive to request the Chief Town Planner to deny any permission for hill cutting activities at Carona-Aldona. Besides collecting signatures after masses and poojas, volunteers are undertaking door-to-door campaigns in different wards of the village. Secular bodies like village associations and social clubs have also supported the ABA in the drive.
A fish-processing unit has been accused of releasing effluents into the Cumbharjua canal at Marcel for the second time since February. Local fishermen on Tuesday complained that various types of dead fish were seen floating in the river and attributed the incident to the effluents discharged by the unit.
