The Mapithel Dam Affected Villages Organisation (MDAVO) has expressed concern on the alleged lack of coordination within the State Irrigation and Flood Control Department (IFCD) in handling the Thoubal project (Mapithel Dam) in Manipur. MDAVO secretary R Leishipem alleged that the agreed minutes of the Expert Review Committee were not followed. "The MDAVO will continue to fight democratically against the IFCD officials till the legitimate demands are addressed and implemented,'' the organization stated.
The entire State of Manipur has been facing acute shortage of water due to the failure of the main water supply project at Singda in Imphal. Official sources said if the state did not receive any rainfall within the next few days, the dam would be without a single drop of water. Meanwhile, Public Health Engineering Department (PHED) Minister T N Haokip visited the Singda dam site and met village chiefs to discuss about the maintenance of the dam. People of Imphal city, who depend entirely on water supply by the PHED, were most affected by the water shortage.
Assam and Jammu & Kashmir received the highest allocation of additional funds for police modernisation during the last fiscal. Twenty-four States had demanded a total of Rs 537.91 crore additional funds but the Centre allocated Rs 346.28 crore only based in their utilisation of funds in 2006-07 and funds available at the revised Budget estimates. Assam got the highest allocation of additional funds of Rs 30.61 crore even as it demanded Rs 37.70 crore for modernising its forces in the fight against insurgency, a senior official said.
The construction of Khuga dam is expected to conclude during the next month and the dam is likely to be inaugurated by the first week of June by the Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh. In this connection the Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh along with other ministers of the State visited the dam site to conduct an inspection recently.
The Ministry of Environment and Forest made the budgetary provisions for North-east States to the tune of Rs. 4647 crore during the last three years. The year wise allocations were Rs. 1388.19 crore, Rs. 1520.14 crore and Rs. 1539.00 crore for the tears 2005-06, 2006-07 and 2007-08 respectively. All the Naga associations in Manipur, opposing the Mapithel Dam (Thoubal Multi-purpose Project), today condemned the memorandum issued by the Cabinet on April 24. The United Naga Council (UNC), Naga Women Union, Manipur (NWUM), All Naga Students Association, Manipur (ANSAM) and Naga Peoples Movement for Human Rights were against the Cabinet's decision to deploy additional security forces at the dam so that it could be constructed without any problem.

Manipur Health Minister Pheiroijam Parijat today expressed concern over the deaths of 30 children due to a mysterious disease, and that he would send a medical team to examine the cause of the disease. The deaths occurred in Manipur's Churachandpur District. Health officials informed that most of the children who had died had complained of breathing problems prior to their deaths. A medical team of Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) has organized a camp at the Parbung Health Centre to monitor the health of the patients.
