  • Corrupt ration dealers exposed

    TAMLUK: Flood victims caught two ration dealers red-handed while they were illegally transporting food grains for selling in the open-market today. The ration dealers were allegedly enjoying CPI-M patronage. This comes at a time when thousands of people are suffering from improper distribution of relief materials due to the devastating floods continuing in the vast areas of Midnapore East district.

  • Role of sacred grove in conservation of plants

    Many traditional conservation ethics of people directly or indirectly protect forest patches by dedicating them to local deities. Such forest pockets, referred to as sacred groves, are more or less small to large chunk of traditionally maintained near virgin forests protected on socio cultural grounds. Named differently in different states of India, these groves are mainly concentrated in tribal areas and are managed by local people for various purposes.

  • Slight improvement in flood situation

    The flood situation in the Purbo and Paschim Medinipur districts of West Bengal showed some improvement on Monday. The death toll climbed to 30 with 19 deaths reported from Paschim Medinipur and the rest from Purbo Medinipur since the floods hit the region last week after heavy rainfall and discharge of water from the reservoirs. Nearly 3 million people have been affected in the two districts, large parts of which still remain submerged, Minister for Disaster Management Mortaza Hossain said here. More than 7,800 villages in 32 blocks have been affected, he added.

While overseeing the flood-hit districts, chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharya described the flood situation, which claimed 25 lives and affected over 22 lakh people as "unprecedented and alarming".

    The flood situation in South Bengal on Thursday has worsened with death toll rising to nine. Worried by the gravity of the situation in East Medinipur and West Medinipur the state government has deployed three companies of Army personnel to expedite relief and rescue operation. Three more companies of the Army have been asked to join the relief operation from Friday. Eastern Air Command has also been pressed for dropping food packets and relief materials in Flood-hit areas of West and East Midnapur since Wednesday evening while flood waters submerged parts of a new district, Bankura.

Chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, who will be travelling to Kolaghat in East Midnapore tomorrow, held a meeting with finance minister Asim Dasgupta, health minister Surjya Kanta Mishra and relief minister Mortaza Hossain in Calcutta. He might visit some of the flood-hit areas tomorrow.

More than 16 lakh people are affected in flash floods that have inundated vast areas in West Bengal's Paschim and Purbo Medinipur districts following torrential rains over the past two days. Four people were killed and three reported missing in the two districts, according to reports reaching here on Wednesday.

  • Bengal calls Army for flood rescue

    Alarmed by the magnitude of the flood in East and West Medinipur, the state government called in the Army and Air Force to expedite rescue and relief operation. Five people have been killed and over 16 lakh have been affected by the floods. Those killed, includes the former confidential assistant of Trinamul Congress chief Mamata Banerjee, Gautam Basu. He and two others were swept away in the flash floods in the Keleghai river on Tuesday night.
