The National Fishermen Forum (NFF) on Sunday decided to observe Monday as the National Day of Protest against the commissioning of Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project. A resolution adopted at the general body of the forum said that the commissioning of the project would ruin the livelihood of hundreds of fishermen in southern coastal districts of Tamil Nadu. Several cases had been filed against the fishermen who held peaceful agitations. The Tamil Nadu government should immediately withdraw the cases and arrest warrants against those protesting against the nuclear project.
Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Sunday ordered allocation of nearly Rs.100 crore to strengthen water resources across the State which include construction of a check dam at the cost of Rs. 35 crore across the Kosasthaliyar for storing the Krishna water from Andhra Pradesh for meeting Chennai’s water requirements. An official release said a basin dam would be constructed at Ladanenthal village in Sivaganga district to channel water to Maranadu lake from the Vaigai river and to nine other lakes at a cost of Rs.12.85 crore, while another bed dam would be built near Atthur village at the cost of Rs.16 crore to supply water Parthibanur Periya Eri, Siriya Eri and Vannikudi Eri.
As many as 16 companies will participate in a meeting on Friday to discuss the tender conditions and suggest changes to make the proposal for solid waste management factories workable. The Chennai Corporation at the pre-bid meeting will focus on ensuring that the technology in the solid waste management plants in Kuthambakkam and Minjur in the outskirts of the city doesn’t harm the surrounding habitations. The work is expected to begin after May.

Suspended particulate matter found above permissible limit at 15 monitored locations Residents across the city on Sunday felt the effects of pollution, with Bhogi fires burning across the city. At all 15 locations monitored by the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board, pollution levels were found above the permissible limit. Virugambakkam residents experienced the highest level of dust pollution on Bhogi day with the locality recording 389 microgram/cubic metre of respirable suspended particulate matter (RSPM). The permissible limit for RSPM is 100 microgram/cubic metre.
