PWD had refurbished 15 shutters last year at a cost of Rs.2 cr. The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) has sanctioned Rs.4.27 crore for repairing damaged shutters at the barrage across the Cauvery River at Upper Anicut (Mukkombu) near Tiruchi. Last year, the Public Works Department refurbished 15 of the 41 shutters on the barrage at a cost of Rs.2 crore, also sanctioned by the NABARD. The department had sought more funds for repairing the remaining shutters at an estimated cost of Rs.4.50 crore in the second phase.
The Lower Bhavani Farmers Association claimed that the yagam conducted by Public Works Department at Bhavanisagar dam seeking divine intervention to bring rain was primarily a tactic to divert the attention of the people from the ineffective water management practices that took place in the dam this year. Having exhausted most of its land bank, the Tamil Nadu Housing Board (TNHB) is planning to take up joint ventures with private land owners in the city, as well as in other parts of the State. According to sources in TNHB, the proposal has been initiated as there is a paucity of land availability in and around the city. Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd is likely to speed up the installation of the Thermal Power Station-II Expansion plant of Neyveli Lignite Corporation, and make a 250-MW unit ready by September. The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Tuesday directed officials to prevent dumping of solid waste in water bodies or their burning along road sides. Disposing of a suo motu public interest litigation petition based on a photo feature published by “The Hindu,” a Bench comprising Justice R. Banumathi and Justice G. M. Akbar Ali directed the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board officials to monitor and ensure that municipal solid waste was not dumped in water bodies or burnt on roadsides. It also instructed the Madurai Corporation Commissioner and Collector to ensure strict enforcement of Municipal Solid Waste (Management and Handling) Rules 2000.
