The Madras High Court Bench here on Monday ordered for production of licences granted by the Collectors of Namakkal, Karur, Tiruchi, Thanjavur, Thiruvarur and Nagapattinam districts to the Public Works Department for quarrying sand along the stretches of rivers Cauvery, Amaravathi and Kollidam flowing through the six districts. A Division Bench comprising Justice R. Banumathi and Justice G. . Akbar Ali passed the direction after it felt that the counter affidavits filed by the officials did not contain information sufficient for disposing of the case.
A fact-finding team of the People’s Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL) has concluded that the no offsite emergency preparedness exercise was held for the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant (KKNPP), and that the Tirunelveli district administration’s claim that such a drill was successfully done was untrue. PUCL national secretary V. Suresh told a press conference here on Saturday that what the district authorities conducted in the name of an emergency preparedness exercise at Nakkaneri, a hamlet seven km from KKNPP on June 9, comprising three stages, was mere eyewash.

However, a section of residents living around the lake suspect norms to have been flouted as government staff were not present to supervise the desilting. Officials made it clear they had not violated rules.
The Chennai Corporation will install a total of 5,000 newly designed toilets in its 15 zones. The toilets will be constructed under public-private partnership mode and the rights of advertisement on the space available in such toilets will be made available to the private entity that sets up the toilet. The contract is likely to be for 10 years. The civic body has started identifying locations where toilets are required in the city. The spots are being identified based on inputs from residents of various localities. Commercial areas lacking in toilet facility are also being identified by the civic body’s officials for setting up the new structures.
The State government has released a sum of Rs 9.05 crore to be disbursed to ‘Thane’ cyclone-affected farmers, who had been enlisted but are yet to get relief, said V. Sampath, Collector. Addressing an official meeting here, he said the cyclone destroyed agricultural and horticultural crops and fishing resources in Vanur, Marakkanam, Koliyanur, Kandamangalam, Thirunavalur and Thiruvennainallur panchayat unions in the district.

The proposed road from Madukkarai cutting across Siruvani Road, Marudhamalai Road and Thadagam Road to join Mettuppalayam Road is expected to ease congestion within the city. The proposed project at Rs. 284 crore passes through areas such as Kovaipudur, Somayampalayam, Pannimadai and the latest alignment proposed is likely to damage houses, apartments and lands.
