Tele-medicine between SAARC
Tele-medicine services will become operational between India, Bhutan and Sri Lanka by this year end, External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee said here today. "To start the tele-medicine service by September this year, a Memorandum of Understanding has already been signed between India and Bhutan," he said adding the service would then become operational between Indian and Sri Lanka too by the year-end.

Disaster response training
Canada has given Sri Lanka support to train officials from government and non-governmental organisations in responding to natural disasters like the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami which devastated parts of its coastline. High Commissioner for Canada, Angela J. Bogdan, said in a statement that the devastating impact of the tsunami and other natural disasters in many countries had reinforced the need for better planning and preparation for major natural disasters."

The International Centre for Cancer (ICC) in Leon France has come forward to assist cancer treatment in Sri Lanka as the incidence of the dreaded disease is on the rise in the country, a spokesman for the Healthcare and Nutrition Ministry said yesterday. "Cancer has increased to epidemic proportions in Sri Lanka with about 3000 patients seeking treatment at the Maharagama National Cancer Institute daily,' he said.

Court makes environment friendly order
When a fundamental rights petition in respect of air pollution and city traffic congestion came up before the Supreme Court today, the Court directed the relevant parties to modify the silencers of the private buses and also regulate the introduction of uniforms for the private bus drivers and conductors and make the use of ticket machines mandatory.

New eco-friendly wood preservative by ITI
An eco-friendly wood preservative developed by the Industrial Technology Institute (ITI), using cashew nut shell liquid, was launched recently at the ITI. The novel formula that represents the third generation of wood preservatives is entirely organic and easy to prepare. This wood preservative was found to be effective against termites, micro-organisms responsible for wood rot, and fungi which cause decay, when evaluated on wood samples treated with this solution.

Chikungunya: Windfall for doctors
Though the Chikungunya epidemic that devastated Ratnapura district with over 10,000 reported cases brought misery and pain to many, it had been a windfall for private medical practitioners, a ministry spokesman said yesterday.
