The municipal solid waste generation is increasing in urban areas. The incineration of organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW) with high moisture content and low calorific value is not environmentally, techno-commercially viable option for energy recovery. The steep increase in energy costs and environmental impacts due to inadequate sanitary methods of solid waste management created an opportunity to explore technologies for extraction of unutilised energy fraction of biomass, as potential source of energy in the form of methane gas recovery.
