The severity of underemployment has been high in rural areas. Considering the severity of the rural unemployment problem, various special employment programmes have been introduced by the Government of India to provide employment opportunities through the creation and strengthening of rural infrastructure. One such employment programme was the Employment Assurance Scheme (EAS) launched by the Ministry of Rural Development on Octtober 2, 1993. The present study was conducted in Mizoram. For the purpose of impact assessment, two Rural Development (RD) Blocks viz. Thingdawl and Zawlnuam were randomly selected.
