The need to intensify agricultural production in the wake of the slow pace of growth in agricultural output realized in the recent past coupled with the rising demand for agricultural commodities; declining per capita availability of arable land, deteriorating position of availability of natural resources such as water; and the desire to maintain a high growth rate of aggregate GDP for the Indian economy has put the agricultural sector back at the center stage of India's planning process.
