Forests in Kashmir, occupying importance second to agriculture, harbour rich hebaceous flora. But due to deforestation, forest cover has reduced to 51% (for the year 1997-1998) against 59% during the pre-planned era, affecting herbaceous wealth of these ecosystems. Dhara catchment of the world famous Dal Lake extending over an area of 21, 467 ha, consisting of 38 micro-watersheds is one of the badly deforested areas of the Kashmir Valley. The present study was undertaken to assess the impact of deforestation on herbaceous taxa of this area.
