The crop productivity in Siwalik rainfed areas including kandi belt of Jammu and Kashmir is very low. To improve the agricultural productivity of these areas, a holistic approach through watershed management project was introduced in early 1990 to manipulate land and water resources more efficiently for better crop production. The growing of crops by the farmers in Kandi areas is not only risky but also pays very little and sometimes even the investments of inputs cannot be met with. Similarly, the yield of maize crop in Karewas of Kashmir is very low as well as that of fruit trees like apple, pear and other fruit crops. In Keri watershed silvi-pastoral and agro-horticultural systems were also introduced. Full grown aonla trees are producing 40-45 kg of fruits tree and are earning an amount of Rs. 300-400 tree.
