The present paper is an analysis of the scheme for the interlinking of rivers on a National Water Grid that would transfer water from one basin to another, from a water source having surplus water to areas with scarce water resources. The idea of interlinking two of the great river systems of India, the Ganga and the Brahmaputra, has been mooted with the idea of developing a grid which would be of gigantic proportions and would involve an astronomical outlay of financial resources to be drawn from national and international bodies. The project would span international boundaries. It is the wisdom of launching on this scheme at such a massive scale that is being looked into in this paper. Even though disparity in the availability of water is a well-known and documented fact, the paper examines closely the many factors affecting the natural situation and how it could be best adapted to the greatest good of the most without endangering any existing sub-systems.
