With the increase in paddy cultivation in Northern plains of India due to advanced agriculture technology, the amount of paddy straw has also increased proportionately. According to a recent report 197 lakh tons of paddy straw is being burnt every year only in Punjab state. This burning not only is causing the respiratory problems due to extensive smoke pollution but also results in loss of 38.52 lakh tons of organic carbon, 59,000 tons of nitrogen, 2,000 tons of phosphate and 34,000 tons of potash every year by the farmers.
