A field study has been taken up in a newly developing area of Jalore city (Rajasthan), a semi-arid region receiving an average normal rainfall to 560 mm. The study of one year duration revealed that water quality of the domestic wells is fast deteriorating. Out of 72 water samples from 6 wells collected between March 2007 to April 2008, 60 wells were contaminated with high levels of nitrate, chloride and faecal coliforms, which were far higher than WHO perscribed tolerance limits.
