Mine spoils are sub-soil material produced as a byproduct of mining activity. Virtually being a sub-soil material, mine spoils are physically, nutritionally and microbiologically impoverished habitats, thwarting the establishment and growth of plants species. Singrauli coalfields extending over 2200 km in the states of Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh is one of the most prominent coal mines of India. Forest department have been using native woody species for revegetation of coal mine spoils. However, some fast growing evergreen exotic trees are also used for revegetation purposes.
