The Nirmal Gram Puraskar was launched by Government of India in the year 2002 with the objective to promote rural sanitation, especially to eliminate the practice of open defecation and to reward PRIs ( Panchayat Raj Institution)Panchayats, Panchayat Samitis, Zilla Panchayat), individuals and institutions for their sustained efforts towards achieving it. Based on the reports and recommendations of the review teams, the National Committee of Nirmal Gram Puraskar consisting of professionals with experience in the field of water supply and sanitation, carried out the assessment in the month of December 2006 and January 2007. After the assessment, Thangammalpuram village received the award from the President of India.
