1 lakh saplings to be planted in 250 villages

TIRUCHI: Towards increasing the green cover and safeguarding the environment, Bharathidasan University will involve over 20,000 NSS volunteers to plant one lakh saplings in 250 villages on October 21 across eight districts in its jurisdiction.
With the saplings provided by Isha Yoga Centre under its Pasumai Karangal Programme, the volunteers will plant them simultaneously in villages. K. Kanagaraju, NSS-Coordinator, Bharathidasan University, said the highest number of 32,000 saplings will be planted in Tiruchi district, followed by 26,000 in Thanjavur district, 12,000 in Nagapattinam district, 10,000 each in Pudukottai and Tiruvarur districts, 8,500 in Perambalur and Ariyalur districts, and 5,500 in Karur district. Each volunteer will plant five saplings. The saplings comprise vembu, pungai, red sandal, kongu, marudhu, and flower and fruit bearing varieties.
