About 100 people of Durganagar and Sathya Sai Nagar areas in Dharmavaram town were hospitalised after suffering from vomiting and diarrhoea due to consumption of contaminated water on Thursday. According to people, municipal officials supplied drinking water to the two areas at 4 pm on Wednesday. People who drank the water, developed vomiting and diarrhoea. About 40 persons, including women and children, have been admitted to the local government hospital from Wednesday night to Thursday. Some others have been getting treatment from private hospitals. Patients faced problems with shortage of doctors and lack of amenities in the government hospital. Doctors suspect that contaminated water is the cause for the illness. The Dharmavaram MLA, Ms Jayamma, spoke to patients in the government hospital on Thursday. Speaking to newsmen, the MLA alleged that such problems were cropping up as the municipal administration had failed to improve sanitation in the town. She said that only one doctor was working on deputation against 12 doctors required in the government hospital, as government had not taken steps to fill the posts. Later, she distributed bread to patients. The municipal chairman, Mr Kalangi Harinath, and others also visited the government hospital and spoke to patients.
